Narmook is a psychological and realistic film about a teenage girl who becomes a victim of the ancient tradition of Bacha Posh—a custom in which families with multiple daughters force one of them to live as a boy, hoping that God will bless them with a son. Upon reaching puberty, the girl is forced to return to her female identity, but this compulsory return plunges her into a deep crisis of identity and gender. She struggles between societal pressures and internal conflicts to discover her true self.
The film seeks to reveal the hidden aspects of gender-based traditions that still exist in parts of Iran. Using precise framing, limited dialogue, and psychological mise-en-scène, Narmook brings the viewer close to the troubled mind and gender struggles of the main character. The film aims to invite a calm yet profound reflection on cultural norms and suppressed identities.
