Shekare Ahoo

This stop-motion animated music video for Persian pop music band Mitra Sumara is inspired by the Persian folk song’s lyrics.

Animator Alice Cohen and I sought to create an art video that illustrates the love-obsessed lyrics of the song and that also expands upon the dreamy, ethereal quality of the musical arrangement.

In this video animated figures dance and whirl over backgrounds of desert mountain peaks, dark starry night skies, colorfully elaborate Persian interiors and ornate exteriors, and ancient city scenes. We incorporated Safavid era and 60s/70s period art images as well. For a bit of whimsy, the animator included 2D and 3D deer images, birds, and colorful feathers along with live footage of myself, too.

The video reflects the dark, dreamy, and violent nature of the song’s lyrics and ends with a timely message of peace and a celebration of Iranian culture.
